Inside this platform, the students will be able to access all the readings and learning materials per subject, answer assignments and quizzes, attend virtual classes, engage in collaborative learning, monitor their progress and grades, and many others.
Let us first give you an introduction to some of the terms that you’ll see inside the BrightSpace learning environment.
Course: These are specific subjects in which you are enrolled in. Here you’ll find contents such as PDF readers, powerpoint presentations, assignments and quizzes that your teachers prepared for you.
Content: There are where your learning and assessment materials can be found. Contents are organized into Units and Lessons.
Assignments: These are activities that you accomplish asynchronously. Teachers give assignments if they expect file submissions from you or some text responses to a certain question.
Quizzes: Another activity accomplished asynchronously. Quizzes are given by teachers if they want to assess your knowledge in a question and answer format. These can be true or false, multiple choice etc.
In the image below, Course name is Habi Training #1. The area in which you see Content, Assignments and Quizzes is what we call the course navigation bar. By clicking those icons, BrightSpace redirects you to them.
Units: These can be described as a folder that houses the different types of content.
Lessons: These are additional layers of organizing folders next to Units.
You will be able to access Units and Lessons once you click the Content icon from the course navigation bar.

Click it and you’ll see a list of all your courses.
Select the desired course or type some search words.
As a first step, log in to your account and go to the specific course in which the assignment belongs to. There are two ways in which you can access your assignment from there.
First is through the Assignment icon that you can find in the course navigation bar.
Click the Assignment icon from the course navigation bar.
You will see a list of all the assignments present in that course. Some other information shown are the completion status, score, evaluation status and due date.
Select the assignment you want to answer.
There is an alternative way that you may find helpful if you cannot determine from the list of assignments which one you need to complete. Instead of accessing the Assignment icon, here’s what you need to do.
Click the Content icon from the course navigation bar. When you visit the Contents, you’ll have a better view of how your teachers arranged the materials in an outline and sequence that they want you to access them.

From time to time, your teachers will engage you in a virtual classroom, a synchronous activity just like in face to face classes. In virtual classrooms, your teachers will be able to share learning materials with you and have discussions real time. It is also possible that you do reporting in these classes!
Log in to your account and go to the specific course in which the virtual class will occur.
Look for the virtual classroom icon in the course navigation bar. Select it.
A popup window will appear and you’ll see an Active Meeting list, which contains all the past, present and future virtual classes, and a Recorded Meetings list which contains the recordings of past classes.
Select the virtual class. Click the three dots under Actions and click Launch. Once your teachers launch the class, you will be able to join.
Communicating with your teachers and knowing how and where to do it are very important. Inside the course you are taking in BrightSpace, you can easily do this! You’ll find an envelope icon at the notification bar at the upper right of your screen. This is your message alert but by clicking this icon, you can conveniently send messages to your teacher as well! You even have two options.
Instant Messages. Just like chats.
Select Instant Messages. A popup window will appear.
Click the Classlist tab. You’ll find everyone in the class including your teachers and classmates.
Select the name of your teacher. You can now initiate a conversation!
Email. Just like GMail.
Select Email. A popup window will appear.
Click the Address book at the upper right side. Scroll down to see everyone in the class.
Select the name of your teacher and click Add Recipient.
Continue composing your email similar to how you do it in GMail. Add a subject, an email body and some attachments if necessary.
Click Send when you are done.
If you want to go through your learning materials offline or you need to have access to a hard copy of a worksheet provided by your teacher, there are a few tricks that you can do. Your teachers prepare your Units and Lessons in two different ways. They can either type the contents directly into the Brightspace learning environment or attach existing materials like PDFs and Powerpoint presentations. Contents prepared in both of these ways can be downloaded. Take note though that there is no direct button to download the contents that are created inside BrightSpace. You can use your browser’s print functionality as a work around. However if you want to download attached materials, here’s how.
From the Units and Lessons, open the content that you wish to download.
Once the content is launched, a Download icon will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click and you’ll now have a copy of this material in your computers!
