Imagine the LMS to be the entire school being implemented online, including its organization, processes, subjects, classes and others.
Administrators take on the technical leadership to prepare functionality, settings, and even appearance of the learning environment. They set up the departments, campuses or other units inside such that the LMS is well- organized and that the Courses are located in proper units. This is important so that org-level changes can easily be implemented. Coordination with the instructors and other school leaders in decision making for your school’s Brightspace learning environment is essential.
Being an LMS administrator would also entail day to day upkeep of the system and providing technical support to the teachers if they need so.
It’s the admins role to provide a stable, well-organized, up-to-date and, above all, effective learning management system for the instructors, students, and parents. To help you fulfil these responsibilities, we curated a set of guides and tutorials from Brightspace documentation.
Each school can customize their login page-- the front page that Users see. You may configure it to reflect the school's branding, edit the layout, and shorten the login page URL.
Inside Brightspace are Organizational Units or Org Units. Examples of which are Departments, Sections, Course Offerings, Semesters, Course Templates and many others. These building blocks are used to reflect your school’s org structure.
As an example, schools commonly have separate departments for the primary and secondary level. And each of these departments is further divided into smaller units, like Faculty, categorized based on subjects. In this structure, the Primary Ed Department has the English faculty, Math faculty etc. Imagine “English 5”. It’s a subject taught by an English faculty member from the Primary Ed Department. This kind of organization is being set up inside Brightspace by the LMS admin such that subjects are properly arranged according to which departments they belong to. , The instructors then access the specific subject English 5 where they upload or develop their lectures, assignments, quizzes etc. Admin also makes sure that the students and teachers are enrolled in the specific subject.
Every User will be assigned a specific role with the permissions associated with it. A role can be an administrator, an instructor or a student, each of which has a set of tools that they can access. While permissions pertain to the kind of interaction that the role can do with the tools accessible. These interactions in simple terms: view, manage, or participate.
It's important to note that roles and permissions of specific Users within your Brightspace learning environment can be different from other Brightspace learning environments. Check the Roles and Permissions page to understand what features each User role has access to.
A User can have varied roles and permissions within a Brightspace learning environment depending on what has been given to him in every org unit level he is in. That is, an instructor in one course offering can be set as a student in a different course offering. Here is a list of resources that can guide you in setting up the roles and permissions of users. Access the following links to learn more about this.
In the next resources that you’ll see, you’ll learn how to create Users at the organization level. This can be defined as administrator, instructor, or student depending on the roles available in your Brightspace learning environment. All Users will have access to the BrightSpace learning environment for your school. After which, you can assign them roles in other org unit levels such as in Course Offerings.
The Courses, or Courses offerings commonly pertains to the specific subject offered in the school. Course Templates, on the other hand, are patterns that Course Offerings follow. Similarly structured Courses are recommended to be patterned after a single Course Template. Both Course Offerings and Course Templates are created by the administrator inside BrightSpace such that when the instructor comes in, the Course Offerings are ready to accept and house the learning materials. Preparing Courses means that (1) the course templates and offerings are created, (2) the Users (instructors and students) are added to it and (3) the course page’s general look is customized
Archiving courses lets you download copies for back-up or archiving. Upload the archived courses to Brightspace to re-offer them later without building them again from scratch.
