Rubrics help us evaluate learners and their performance in class. Evaluating grading activities through Brightspace such as discussion topics and assignments can be done easily by setting up Rubrics, and you and your learners will have a clearer understanding of how work is graded.
Analytic rubrics allow you to define performance criteria that you’re looking for from the outputs of your students. Analytic rubrics are most helpful if you want to give your students’ detailed feedback on the output or performance they produced. Here’s how you can set it up:
From the course offering, go to the Rubrics page on the navbar. You will be redirected to the Rubrics page. From there, you’ll see the different rubrics that were created in the past. To create a new rubric, press the New Rubric button.
You will have different options from the Edit Rubric page. From here, let’s change the Type to Analytic. Feel free to change the scoring type.
You can define the performance criteria on the leftmost column. Write down all of the performance criteria you want to assess. If you need to add performance criteria, press the Add Criterion button on the bottom row.
On the topmost row, you can define the performance levels and their respective points. You can define the levels using text indicators, and you can change the points assigned for each level.
You can also create new criterion groups if you want to segregate performance criteria. Press the Add Criteria Group button.
Finally, if you define the minimum score achieved, the name of the competency, and a description for that competency.
Once you’re done, press Close, and the Rubric you created is done. You’re all set to use that Rubric!
Holistic rubrics allow you to grade the output as a whole instead of grading its individual components. Holistic rubrics are most useful when you’re grading a large group of students and/or the outputs or performance they produced do not require detailed feedback. Here’s how you can set it up:
From the course offering, go to the Rubrics page on the navbar. You will be redirected to the Rubrics page. From there, you’ll see the different rubrics that were previously created. To create a new rubric, press the New Rubric button.
You will have different options from the Edit Rubric page. From here, let’s change the Type to Holistic. Feel free to change the scoring type if you do not want to provide a score to the performance levels.
From there, you can define the different performance levels. You can also define descriptors for each performance level.
Once you’re done, press Close and it will automatically save. You’re all set to use that rubric!
Online discussions are great for encouraging students to express their thoughts, exchange ideas with their classmates, and learn from each other. You can attach rubrics to discussion topics so that you can assess the learners directly from their responses to threads. This will allow you to grade their responses easily without having to go to another page. Here’s how you can do it:
From the course offering page, go to the Discussions page through the navbar which shows you the different topics you’ve created.
Beside the title of the topic you want to attach a rubric to, you’ll see a button with a down arrow. Press it and click Edit Topic. You’ll be redirected to another page.
Go to the Assessment tab. Under Rubrics, press the Add Rubric button. A popup will appear.
Select the rubrics you want to use from the list by clicking the checkboxes beside the titles of the rubrics. Press the Add Selected button when you're done.
The rubrics have then been added to the discussion topics. From there, you’re all set!
You can attach rubrics to assessments so that you can grade your learners’ outputs using existing rubrics that you might have used before. With your busy schedule, saving a few minutes through this feature can mean a lot! Here’s how you can do it:
From the course offering page, go to the Assignments page through the navbar.
To attach a rubric to an assignment, press the arrow down button beside the title of the assignment and click Edit Assignment.
Scroll down to the Rubrics portion and click Add Rubric.
Select the rubrics you want to use from the list by clicking the checkboxes beside the titles of the rubrics. Once done, press the Add Selected button.
Once you’re done, click Save and Close which automatically attaches the rubric to the assignment. You can then use the rubric in your students' future submissions.
