Brightspace enables instructors to upload existing materials from computers to the learning environment, may that be a course syllabus in .doc or in .pdf, or a presentation in pptx! Uploading existing materials works wonders because it saves time for educators who no longer have to type carefully curated materials.
Note that in order to upload your syllabus and learning materials inside Brightspace, you have to prepare their containers known as Units and Lessons in the Course Offering. Visit Organizing the learning journey into Units and Lessons to learn more.
After setting up your Units and Lessons, upload your syllabus. Here’s how:
Go to the Course in which you want to upload or syllabus or other files.
From the navigation bar, click Content.
Simply click the Unit or Lesson where you want to place your file.
Click Add Existing. You’ll see a few options on what to add, and at the bottom of the screen you’ll see a Browse Files button.
You can either drag and drop the file from your computer.
Or, click Browse Files and locate the file inside your computer. You will be prompted that it has been successfully uploaded. And you’ll see it now inside your Contents.
You can always recheck your uploaded files before your students see them. By default, all setup Contents are hidden. Just set them to visible once they are ready.
Competencies are essential for educators because these help you set goals for our students and also help you track how they progress with a course or class. In Brightspace, you can map out competencies, learning objectives, and activities and create Competency Structures that would help you assess your students’ progress within your class or course.
To view the Competencies tool:
Click Competencies on the navigation bar.
You can view existing Competency Structures, click on a competency or learning objective and click on Structure
Activities are the graded elements within Brightspace. You can create activities using tools within Brightspace, such as quizzes, surveys, and discussion topics, or associate external activities outside of the Brightspace environment as activities. It’s important to map out how activities are linked to the content in the Units and Lessons in Brightspace
Competency Structures have a parent-child relationship . Competencies are the parents and learning objectives, as well as other competencies, are the children. Learning objectives are the parents of activities and other learning objectives. Complex Competency Structures can be created. For example: competencies and learning objectives can overlap with each other or can be arranged in hierarchies. But it would be best to start creating the individual elements first before assigning relationships between them
The competencies and Competency Structures you will be using for your class or course will depend on your school or institution. These competencies might also be shared across different classes, so coordinate closely with your LMS administrator in mapping out Competency Structures. Once the Competency Structures have been set in place, you can now use them to evaluate your students’ learning.
